Oklahoma Aquarium Association Oklahoma City Meeting Minutes, September 17th, 2005
The September 17, 2005 OKCAA meeting was held at Pat's house. Thank you Pat for letting us into your home. Welcome to our newest member Steve Bryan. Hope you enjoyed yourself.
The topic for September meeting was on Soil Spawning Killifish presented by Earl Blewett. Some killies are soil spawners and some are plant spawners. In this case the soil spawners are usually small colored annual fish. Their natural habitat range from shaded rainforest to open savannas.
Before you start spawning, conditioning the adults is a good idea. You must feed, feed and feed live, frozen or dried foods. Such foods are white or grindal worms, frozen brine shrimp, chopped bloodworms or glassworms, flakes and micropellets. For extra conditioning and more eggs separate the male and female to "fatten them up" then you can combine them.
They can spawn in a one to three gallon tank or container with a heater, some plants and a light hood but it is not necessary. The only basic thing they need is water and either moss, sand, coir, peat or gravel. Now its time to collect the eggs once you think they have laid enough eggs then it's time to collect. Dry the substrate of you choice along with the eggs and store them. Incubation can vary between weeks and months.
