Oklahoma Aquarium Association
Meeting Minutes, August 20th, 2005

The August 20, 2005 OKAA meeting was held in our very own Oklahoma City Zoo in the Education building. Oh, no wait that's right, we were invited to pay for a room if we wanted to hold a meeting there since we were not on their room list. Plain and simple the zoo policies were changed. What were we to do but put our heads together but wait it's a bird...it's a plane...no it's Patricia to the rescue. The OKAA meeting was held at Patricia's house. Thanks so much you guys. Thanks to Brian for getting chips and drinks.

This meeting's talk was on Betta Genetics by Gerald Griffin. He discussed the different types of bettas, types of finage, color variations, which traits were dominant and which were recessive. He also explained to us how many colors produce infertile young and what methods were used to achieve certain desireable colors. He discussed the different breeding setups used by everyone from the novice breeder up to the massive asian fish farms. He also showed us several photos of the spawning routine that took place with a pair of his betta splendens in a 10 gallon tank using a styrofoam cup to isolate the bubblenest from surface agitation.

After the presentation, Brian Carson handed out the following BAP certificates:

  • Michael Dennis for Ancistrus sp. and Pseudotropheus Demasoni
  • Brian Carson for Nothobranchius Korthausae Mafia Island Tan 02-05, Poecilia sp. Endlers and Illyodon Furcidens
