Meeting Minutes, January 18th, 2003

The January 18, 2003 meeting of the OKCAA was held at Kim and Vance Stephens home at 2209 Tracy's Terrace in Edmond. There was some confusion in the announced meeting times (6:00 to 8:00 or 6:30 to 8:30). The resolution to this seems to be that the meetings are supposed to run from 6:00 to 8:00. Joe Anderson brought the meeting to some semblance of order at 6:50.

Present: Dean Hougen, Cynthia Teague, Sean Furney, Ramey Furney, Kelly Higgins, Dale Jones, Brian and Lori Carson, Mike Dennis, Jon Jones, Joe Anderson, Kimberley Stephens, Sarah Bourne, Susan Hill, Liz Davis, Rick Niles, Lee Gans, Gerald Griffen, and Vance Stephens.
(Note: This list roughly reflects the order in which the members were sitting at the time the meeting started, starting from the north end of the room and proceeding clockwise, with some additions for later arrivals at the end. So, if you don't know someone's name but you do know someone who was sitting nearby, this list might help you to associate a name with a face.)

SETTING UP A SUCCESSFUL AQUARIUM
The primary topic of the evening was planning for the March meeting, which will be a panel discussion/presentation aimed at helping new aquarists set up a successful aquarium.

The panelists will include volunteers from the club and from industry. It is likely that we will have representatives from SeaChem, The Reef Shop, as well as one or two other organizations helping. Club members who will be helping include Dean (on good and poor choices for first fish), Dale and Susan (on feeding), Brian (on cycling), and Sean (on tank placement). We still need someone to talk about equipment. Other topics may be covered as well, if people see a need. Joe is coordinating. Please contact him with ideas or to volunteer.

We need to be sure to get the word out about the March meeting, in order to bring in new aquarists. The following members will contact the following papers to get in notices about this meeting: Cynthia (Norman), Joe (Gazette and Lawton), Kimberley (Edmond and UCO Vista), and Rick (Daily Oklahoman). (Mike will check the Daily Oklahoman to see if the notice runs.)

We still need to determine the location for the March meeting. Joe is checking into a couple of places. If you have ideas or could do some checking, please contact Joe.

FEBRUARY MEETING
The February meeting will be at Dale's house in Edmond. The program will be Dale telling us about his angelfish breeding set-up.

BY-LAWS
Several people are still looking at revising the club by-laws. Those at the meeting expressing interest in this were Sean, Ramey, Lee, Vance, and Jon.

INTRODUCTIONS
We went around the room and introduced ourselves, with each member saying a few words about the involvement in the hobby.

BAP
The first fish were turned in for credit under the club's new Breeders Award Program! Dale turned in five young angelfish, that unfortunately did not count toward BAP points because there needed to be (six).. Dale went ahead and donated them to the club's auction anyway, along with two other adult (male?) black angels that joined a donated plant from Joe Anderson's tank on the auction block. For more details on the BAP, contact Brian Carson who is running the program.

Thanks to everyone for their part!
