Oklahoma Aquarium Association Articles
The 2003 Fall outing for OKCAA members was a native fish and plant collecting trip to the Barren Fork Creek in northeastern Oklahoma. Water conditions at the collection site were 72 degrees F and a PH of 6.8 to 6.9. A german degree of hardness for the carbonate component was 6 to 7, and total hardness was 8 to 9. A Tetra test set was used for the three tests performed, and a backup PH test was done with an Aquarium Pharmaceuticals test kit. The flowing stream was composed of coarse sand and rocks with no mud, I think it was all washed down stream because of the swift current. Water in the creek was clear enough to get about 4 to 5 foot visibility and the water level was about normal. There was a small amount of plant life. Several types of fish were collected including Gambusia Affinus, Silverside minnows, Orange throat darters, a Madtom (a small catfish), Hognosed suckers, Green sunfish, Red sunfish, Longeared sunfish, a couple of Minnows with an attractive red tail and black stripe down each side, a Spotted bass (released), Red horse minnows, a Fundulus species (killiefish), and numerous small Crayfish. A couple of types of plants were taken "home". Elodea, Cambomba, and a Ludwigia sp. ended up in several members' tanks. The weather was miserably rainy in OKC and Tulsa but in Tahlequah and points farther east it was partly sunny and warm. Weather conditions for the field trip were near perfect. The OETA film crew missed out on a nice dry day of collecting. OKCAA members that enjoyed the trip include Joe Anderson, Gerald Griffin, Brian Carson, Howard Sarrington, Mike Dennis and sons and daughter, Mark and Cora James, and Lee Morey. Lunch was charbroiled burgers and chips prepared by Brian Carson. It was the general consensus that lunch was greatly appreciated by those that spent a grueling morning of dipping, seining, netting, and playing in the water. Here are some pics of the trip
